My step by step guide to interning!
As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve done three internships in the field of Public Relations/Marketing. During these internships I’ve had friends and people who follow me on Instagram/Snapchat ask me how I got these internships and what advice would I have for someone looking to start doing internships. Rather than reply the exact same thing to people in individual messages, I figured it’d be best to do one big post on my experience to date here.
Before I begin, I need to stress that any of the following comments I make are not a reflection on/aimed at any of the places I’ve interned in. These comments are about the whole concept of internships in general.
Why look for an internship?
When I was looking into my current marketing programme with the aim of getting into PR with it, I had literally no idea what an internship was. I was then told by a very helpful person in the industry that you will more than likely have to do internships for a good few years before you get offered a permanent job by an employer. As soon as I heard this, I decided to look up PR company’s in Dublin and immediately sent emails to them.
Tip number one: Time
Look up any marketing awards that have either happened or are coming up. On the award ceremony’s website, it will say what are the nominees for the awards and what PR company’s are responsible for them. The awards that I used were the An Post Smart Marketing Awards .Once I found the list of company’s, I then decided that I’d be smart about how I used my time and use my summers (I wasn’t doing exams and wasn’t working at the time) to complete internships so I would have to do less after I have a degree.
Tip number two: Research
Do your research. Study the agency’s website and gather as much information as you can on them and their clients. For some bizarre reason, many agency’s don’t list their clients on their websites. To find out their client list, look them up on Instagram and they will usually mention some if not all of their clients. This grade A creeping will help you see the kind of work they’ve done and is a great thing to mention in an interview (whether it be for an internship or permanent job). Find out the names of the people who work there and who set up the business. This’ll come in handy later on down the line.
Tip number three: Appearance
Be presentable. Always and I mean ALWAYS look your best when going to an interview whether it’s for something for you to have enough money to sesh (why else would anyone 18-20 want a minimum wage job??) or interviewing for your dream job ALWAYS dress professionally even though PR is quite a casual place NEVER wear jeans to an interview.
How to apply:
Agency’s will often have an ‘info@companyname.ie’ email address. This account will be the general one for the agency and will have numerous emails being sent to it on a daily basis. During your research you’ll have found out who set up the agency. When you send them your C.V simply put ‘FAO founders name’ as the subject line of the email so it’ll find its way to this person
If you’re applying for your first internship and have no experience in the area of PR don’t worry. My first email I sent was the following:
When you’ve no experience and applying to an agency you need to have your shit together. They don’t HAVE to hire you especially when you’ve no experience. Sell your personality and your skills and tell them WHY they should hire you.
When you get the internship
-Be organised
First things first. Buy a pen and notebook. This way you can note who told you to do what, when and when it’s due for. You’re an intern so it’s unlikely you’ll be tasked with doing something on your own. You’re an intern so you’ll be helping out in existing tasks.
-Be Helpful
Always and I mean ALWAYS offer to do things. If , by some miracle, you find yourself with nothing to do , ask the others in the office/ your section and see if they need help with anything even if it’s something as small as sourcing tissue paper or making tea/coffee for the office/your section. This eagerness and willingness won’t go unnoticed and will benefit you in the long run
-Prioritise
When you’re an intern in an agency, you’ll be working on more than one task at a time. In fact, you’ll be working on one and have another one given to you while you’re still getting through the first one. The trick is to use that notebook I mentioned and prioritise. If your first task is something like inputting figures into an excel document (its torture but needed for various things within PR) and the second is pricing the rental of a venue for an upcoming event, do the pricing first as it won’t take you as long as the excel document.
-Ask questions
If you’re unsure about anything , just ask. The agency know you’re not an expert in the field so always ask if you’re unsure of something as there may be an easier way of doing something rather than the way you’re doing something.
Now for some real talk…
For the most part internships are an amazing experience. I’ve had some amazing experiences which I wrote about here . I also gained valuable experience working with high-end/premium brands which will look amazing on a CV when going to apply for jobs once I’ve finished college. You get invited to events and develop friendships and network with people in the industry and to me, this networking is VITAL in a country as small as Ireland as at the end of the day, it’s not WHAT you know but WHO you know. It’s because of these internships that I’ve developed relationships within the industry which will help me along the way.
Even though I need to rely on internships, I don’t necessarily agree with all aspects of them. Most internships I’ve come across in Ireland are unpaid or are dressed up to be this super amazing job opportunity for someone just out of college but the reality? They want your skills to do a full days work without paying you. You’d be lucky if they give you expenses to cover things such as travel or lunch.
In my opinion, internships should be governed as they’re basically glorified slave labour. I was very lucky to have the support of my parents when I needed money especially when I left my job to intern as my manager wanted more hours from me and I wasn’t prepared to take time out of something that would help me excel in my future career for a dead-end retail job… The government should put legislation in place that protects interns as technically you’re not an employee so you don’t have to sign a contract so you’re not protected under any of the existing employment laws.
I hope the above tips helped you and answered any questions you’ve got about internships. If you’ve any questions feel free to DM me on Instagram and I’ll do my best to help you out!

Admin Alcohol & Afterparties
The last 6 weeks of my summer have consisted of admin, events and hangovers. I’m very lucky that my internship allows me to both help out at and attend these amazing events on behalf of our clients . So below, I’m going to go through all the events that I’ve gone to and what exactly I’ve been up to during the last few weeks.
PrettyLittleThing #SunSeaSlay
On the 7th of June, PrettyLittleThing launched their new ‘Love from the west coast’ collection in the beautiful Morgan Hotel Penthouse Suite in Temple Bar. This event was like no other as the CEO of PrettyLittleThing Umar Kamani came over especially for the launch , bringing no other than Coronation Street hunk Ryan Thomas with him! (Turns out the two are besties!) . The suite was amazing with some spectacular views right across the city from its roof terrace as well which added to the summery vibe!

In the penthouse, the bedroom was turned into a gifting suite where you could select items from different rails and fill up a bag. Once you’d done that, you could go out to the living area where there was a FREE bar and some cool little bits like an embroidery station as well as a glitter station which seemed like a good idea at the time but little did I know, I’d STILL be finding glitter SIX WEEKS on from it…

After the glitter, I spent the rest of my night talking to some of my favorite bloggers and people in the media industry and I have to say, I had an absolute BALL! As if the night couldn’t get any better, the CEO of PrettyLittleThing invited us to party with him in Krystle nightclub on Harcourt Street. When we arrived there was an area for all of us and two big bottles of Grey Goose and mixers in a bucket!

Boohoo x Tyga press dinner

On the 14th of June , Boohoo held a press dinner for the launch of their collection with Tyga. This was a more low-key event with a sit down dinner casual drinks on the terrace in The Woollen Mills which is such a beautiful place for an event – you’re quite literally in the middle of a busy city yet it couldn’t feel more relaxed and chill!

Jameson Bow St Sessions

The Jameson Bow St Sessions was held in their newly refurbished distillery on Bow Street in Smithfield . On the night they had Irish talent such as Daithi perform. I will admit I wasn’t looking forward to this event as I don’t have a massive interest in Irish music but I’m so glad I went as the atmosphere that night was amazing and just such a fun experience!

Goss.ie 3rd birthday party
I lived the absolute Celtic Tiger dream when there was an invite sent around for the 3rd birthday party of entertainment site Goss.ie. It was held in Krystle nightclub with a free bar and had models, TV personalities and members of the wider Irish media in attendance ( hey 2007, how’ve you been??). The night was a lot of fun with fab people and fab music. I went away the next day and it’s safe to say travelling with a hangover on a flight with screaming toddlers isn’t an ideal combination…
That was pretty much everything I got up to over the last 4-6 weeks and was why I wasn’t as active on here as I would’ve liked to be!

Bloggerconf '17
As you guys will know from my insta I went to Bloggerconf last weekend in the RoundRoom in the Mansion House in Dublin. I won my ticket after entering a competition on BMW Ireland’s Facebook page which was a complete shock as I never win ANYTHING.
So the day started with me being collected in a BRAND NEW BMW which was just what I needed having been out the night before celebrating with classmates. The car itself was BMW’s new one series which I have to say is a seriously impressive car and a lot bigger than it looks on the inside!
I was allowed to bring a plus one so I brought the ever so fab Dee aka inthedeetales (check out her blog here if you’re into all things fashion and beauty!) Once we got there we were greeted by BMW head of social media who took a not too bad photo of the two of us beside the car.
The conference itself had talks from some amazing people on great topics such as how to work with a brand as well as how to calculate your ‘fee’ when working brands as well as how to grow and maintain a YouTube channel. The Youtube talk was done by Rob Lipsett and I remember sitting and Rob came on to talk about Youtube . After listening to his talk I felt like doing a lap or 10 around the room!
As well as a VIP collection and free ticket to the conference, I also got dinner in FIRE as part of my prize and once my mother found out about this part, she very kindly invited herself as my plus one… (soz Dee lol)
The dinner in FIRE was lovely. I’d never been before so was excited to eat there. From the minute we got there the staff couldn’t have been nicer! Despite the fact that the restaurant was mega busy with communion parties, the staff were spot on with everything and looked after us as if we were the only people there!
As well as a ticket and dinner and a collection in a VIP car, I also got a goodie bag which had some amazing bits in it!
I had such a great time at the event and I just want to say a massive thank you to BMW for giving me the chance to go!
Don’t forget to follow me on my social media below!

What I did last Summer
As I’ve previously mentioned I’m doing a Marketing course in college. Before I started this course however, I had previously completed two internships during the summer of 2016 – one in an International advertising agency and the other in an Irish entertainment and showbiz website.
I’ll talk you through how and why I got my internship(s) as it will help you a heap depending on your desired career path.
Back in 2016, I did a college course that I thought was for me but actually wasn’t . Once I had decided that Marketing was what I wanted to study and that Public Relations was the area I wanted to work in , I set about asking people who I knew in the industry the absolute ins and outs of it. The information I got back was probably better than anything I’ve ever gotten from a book or website. I was told that many people want to work in PR , in fact more people than there are jobs and that the sad reality was that if I wanted to work in the industry, I’d have to do internships for an unknown time before I would be able to get a proper paying job. So with that in mind, I googled marketing and PR companies and eventually over time I heard back from some, had interviews arranged and also didn’t hear back from the majority of them… . One of the agency’s that got back to me referred me on to a friend of hers in another agency who was looking for a PR intern and after a short , informal interview I got the internship in what I now know is a worldwide company with offices in California, Paris and London.
During my brief time there, I got a complete insight into the PR world and learned that no two days are the same. For example, one day I was putting together press packs of a new product from a well-known biscuit manufacturer to be sent out to agency/radio stations/journalists while the next day, I was searching the internet for uniforms for an amazing project that is to date one of the coolest things that I’ve been a part of. Sadly, I was told that since it was a quiet period I was no longer needed and finished up after a month . Despite the fact that I wasn’t there for so long, I have learned so much and looking back, I was extremely lucky that I hit the ground running in such a fast paced industry.
So after this, I decided to take a month out and actually have some bit of a break and went on holiday and just hung out with friends. One day while on Snapchat I saw that an Irish entertainment and showbiz site was looking for a PR and marketing intern so I quickly sent them a message and within two days of that message, I got an interview and also another internship!.
During my time there, I split my time between sending out emails to company’s for advertising opportunities on the website. The other half of my time was helping cover events with the sites reporter and this is where my tiny little gay brain exploded with excitement. Rather then squish all of the cool things I got up to into a tiny paragraph, I’ll do a quick list down below as well as links to the photos on my Instagram for you guys to have a look at! For clarity, I’ll call the first internship ‘company A’ and the second, company B)
Company A
Although I only worked a month in company A, the events/projects I got to work on were amazing for someone who just about knew what the letters ‘PR’ stood for…
7up Ice bar
This was probably one of the coolest things I’ve worked on. The ice bar was basically a shipping container that was lined with ice and had a fully functioning (non-alcoholic) bar set up in it. They had a cool area that you could have photos taken and then a bar with the 7up logo carved into it. As well as cutting god knows how many slices of limes, I also had to run around town and spend crazy amounts of other people’s money on ridiculously expensive things (I spent 95 euro on a bow tie…) and also had to run from literally one end of town to the other to get 5 pairs of the same shoes as well as other bits of uniform for the staff in the bar…
Caffe Di Milano Biscuits
For this project, I had to run around probably every Dunnes Stores on the southside of Dublin and buy medium-sized wicker baskets and put together a press pack to be sent to journalists/people in the media. Seeing these people share photos of the deliveries on social media kind of made me proud knowing that I spent time putting them together!
Company B
Now, Company B is where the excitement really starts to kick in! During my time here I did everything from a cookie launch to the launch of RTE’s Autumn Schedule.
Paleo Cookie Launch
Probably one of the first events I covered was the launch of Paleo Cookies and as well as getting free samples of these cookies, I also got to meet the absolute hunk that is Ryan Thomas from Coronation Street. Seeing a group of people turn up and seeing the buzz in the cafe was amazing and this was when I knew that PR was what I wanted to do with my life.
Dublin Fashion Festival 2016
The Dublin Fashion Festival runs from the 5-11 of September every year and to celebrate this, they hold the launch in city Hall and use clothes from local shops in the area, both independent and high street chains. This was the first time I was surrounded by people like Brendan Courtney, Darren Kennedy and people such as Joanne Larby and Suzanne Jackson, people who I had, up until then, only ever watched through my phone. To say I was loving life was an understatement (and the goodie bags weren’t half bad either) I even walked away with a cool share size bar of Galaxy with my name on it!
So to end this, I’m happy to say that I’ve recently received another internship at another PR agency who represent some pretty big clients so no doubt I’ll have more exciting experiences to tell you guys about so keep an eye on my social channels which I’ll list below!

Mental Health – My Story…
Statistically, it is known that men don’t talk about our feelings/serious things and instead, choose to sweep it under the rug and forget about it until it ultimately pops up again somewhere down the line.
This in my opinion, is absolute bullshit – why should a modern , independent nation such as ourselves be ‘OK’ with such antiquated behaviour?? I have the personal belief that it’s more than ok to talk about how you feel and to quote the good old saying , ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’. I’m not afraid to share my own story so I guess here it goes …
Back in 2014, around the time of the leaving cert I began to feel very anxious which, is normal around the leaving certificate as you worry and stress about the points you’ll get and whether or not you’ll be a success or failure.
My depression was so bad at one point that I remember refusing to get out of bed. I woke up and simply pulled the covers over my head and just wanted to forget everything and everyone for that day. I ended up having my dad sit on the edge of my bed trying to coax me out of bed . It wasn’t that I didn’t want to get out of bed, it was because I hadn’t the mental strength or energy to get up. Thankfully , I’ve amazingly supportive parents who helped me through probably some of the shittest months of my life and after a nice little heart to heart, I got out of bed and tried to start my day as normal.
After I was coaxed out of bed , I got up and went to school in an almost fit of tears purely because my head was so muddled with everything that I had kept to myself. I didn’t know how to process anything in my head so it just came out in floods of tears .
I managed to make the journey to school without bursting into tears but when I went into school and people would ask how I was (as you would to someone who was visibly upset) , I’d just break down completely. I’m very lucky to have the friends that I do because they’ve been unbelievably amazing and are always there whether it’s just for a quick phone call to calm me down after feeling anxious or to sit beside them and confide in them something that’s troubling me.
So once I’d left the secondary school system I felt better than I had in the previous few months . I had just started a PLC and again, met some absolutely amazing people who’ve gone above and beyond to be there for me . As the year went on and external situations which I’m not going to talk about yet got worse, so did my mental health… I’d lash out at people , get very worked up over tiny tiny things and would feel very very low to the point where I honestly didn’t see the point in living and seriously contemplated just ending it all .
It was when I confided in a lecturer of mine that things got better . I started to see a counsellor , one which I’m still seeing to this day and is working wonders for me . It was through this counsellor that I realised these low moods of mine were actually depression and the tightness I’d feel in my chest and sudden irritability was actually anxiety which cleared up so much for me because up until this point, I was freaking out over both of these things. The scary thing about anxiety and panic attacks is that when you first experience them, you’ve no idea what they are and they can be absolutely frightening and not to mention physically exhausting too.
Counselling is one of those area where it’ll either work 100% for you or not at all.
If it isn’t for you then I’d highly recommend in confiding in a friend, a loved one or even just someone you trust, but just doing that first step and talking to someone is probably one of the hardest but best things you can do.
If you’re reading this and know a friend or loved one who may seem like they’re going through a hard time, let them know that you’re there for them no matter what.
If you’re reading this and you’re going through a shit time then please please please confide in someone because as the saying goes, ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’ .
I couldn’t recommend confiding in friends/family/people you trust enough because I firmly believe that it’s because of friends and family that I’m still here today.
Til next time,
Conor xo
